G.A.P.P.: Girls Achieving Personal Power

Description:
Young ladies in our community need strong leadership, direction and development of self-worth. Developing a sense of self-worth in each participant is the basis of G.A.P.P. program. The G.A.P.P. program is designed to educate, train, empower, and involve females, ages 7-17 years, in acquiring the skills necessary to refrain from unhealthy activities.

Curriculum:
The program curriculum will focus on issues that young girls face during each developmental stage of life. Knowing what to expect developmentally will encourage girls to develop appropriate expectations and empower them to make healthy choices. With these developmental changes, participants become aware of their need for increased independence, more power in making decisions, more responsibility, and more planning for future education and job preparation.

Purpose:
The G.A.P.P. program will provide educational classes at the five area schools within the targeted neighborhood. The objective is to promote and maintain positive self-worth, to increase the use of personal power in a positive way, increase awareness regarding sexual self-worth, to educate participants of reasons why people abuse drugs and alcohol. The G.A.P.P. program provides exposure to other females demonstrating their use of positive personal power in the Lubbock community.

Target Area:
Girls living in the 79415 zip code or youth that attend the following elementary schools: Tubbs, Wolffarth, Jackson, McWhorter, and Cavazos.
