The Family Place: A Place of Hope On the road of life, many obstacles may stand in the way of the hopes and dreams of families in East Texas. Education, employment or a stable family life may seem out of reach. Many find themselves in a cycle that leads to hopelessness and long-term dependence on public assistance. They can’t find a job that will support their families because they don’t have an education. They don’t have an education because they can’t afford child care, and they can’t afford child care because they don’t have a good job. With the help of Buckner Family Place, these families can start fresh and have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a better life…and lifestyle. Buckner Family Place is a unique collaboration involving Buckner Children and Family Services, Angelina College and the Women’s Shelter of East Texas, Inc. This collaboration offers families the opportunity to achieve enduring self-sufficiency. Services provided: • An on-site child development center cares for children in a professional setting, allowing parents to concentrate on reaching their educational and vocational goals • Rental subsidies allow for long-term housing • Counselors provide on-site therapy services • Residents gain their academic/vocational education through Angelina College • Tutoring, vocational counseling and placement opportunities give academic support. At Buckner Family Place, residents live in a safe, secure environment in their own apartments. An on-site child development center allows them to attend college classes knowing that their children are safe, having fun and learning. This combination of a place to live, a college education and childcare services offers the promise of hope for tomorrow. To fully achieve success in the program, participants remain in residence until the completion of their vocational/educational plan, which usually lasts one to two years.
